Everything is urgent, nothing is measured.
You are building the product, finding customers, answering investors and hiring. Your numbers live in a billing tool, an inbox, a spreadsheet and your head. When someone asks how are we doing, the honest answer takes an hour to assemble.
The founder three traps
- Building a data stack before you have a question. Dashboards for everything, decisions about nothing.
- Buying AI tools for the sake of it. A preliminary MIT report (Project NANDA, 2025) found that 95% of organisations in its sample saw no measurable return from generative AI, while a small share of integrated pilots produced millions in value. It is a preliminary, self-reported study, so do not treat 95% as a law. Its authors say the problem is how tools are fitted into workflows, not the models themselves.
- Reporting to investors from memory. Different numbers every month, and a creeping loss of trust.
A better habit: five numbers and one decision, every Monday
Write down five numbers. Pick the ones that decide whether you survive and grow: cash runway in months, new leads, calls booked, customers at risk and hours spent on the real work. Then write the one decision that matters this week, with two or three options and their trade-offs.

Show and tell: a sample founder card. The business and the numbers are illustrative.
It fits in a spreadsheet. It takes about two minutes to read. You can ask your AI tool for the trade-offs, then check them against your own data.
Where AI really helps a small team
- Before the investor call: what three hard questions will they ask about these numbers?
- After the call: turn your notes into decisions, owners and dates.
- Weekly: summarise customer emails into the themes that keep coming up.
Start with one small pilot. Pick a task you repeat every week. Measure the hours before and after. Keep it if it works.
