In Your Shoes: the New Hire

In Your Shoes, No. 8  ·  For: people new to a job, a sector or a country  ·  Reading time: 5 min

Month one, and nobody explained the dashboard.

You are new. You have been handed a dashboard, a folder of reports and a list of acronyms. Everyone assumes you know what active customer means. Nobody remembers when that was last defined.

You do not want to ask. You also do not want to build your first month on a number you do not understand.

Microsoft 2026 Work Trend Index found that 65% of AI users fear falling behind if they do not adapt quickly. The new person feels that pressure most.

Five questions for every number you inherit

  • What exactly does it count, and what does it leave out?
  • Who owns it?
  • When was it last updated, and from where?
  • Which decision does it feed?
  • What would make it wrong?

Asking these is not a sign of weakness. In our experience it is what makes people trust a newcomer.

Write the decision first

Before you dive into any data, fill in a one-page question brief. It is the first step of our method.

Show and tell: a filled-in example. Replace the sample answers with your own.

A vague question gets a vague chart. A brief takes ten minutes, and it saves your first project from growing sideways.

Use AI as a patient tutor, with limits

  • Do: paste a public document or a plain description and ask it to explain the material as if you are new to the sector, and to list what it is unsure about.
  • Do: ask it to turn your messy notes into a glossary.
  • Do not: paste confidential data, client names or anything your organisation has not approved.
  • Always: check what it tells you against a person or the primary source before you repeat it in a meeting.

Learn a sector numbers from the outside

If you are new to a sector, the public data tells you what the industry watches. The B4A Data and AI Playground publishes stories built from official statistics on migration, trade, finance, education and tourism, with the source on every chart. It is a low-pressure way to learn how people in a field talk about their numbers.

Why we built it

The question brief and the five questions come straight from our method. We use them with clients on day one, because the first week sets the standard for everything after it.
